Midpoint of the drive is Shady Valley, with stores and food, as well as souvenirs at the gas station and Country Store. There is also another smaller store on the opposite corner.

Day Trips
We have created several tours that will take you through the Tennessee, Virgina, and North Caralina mountains. The scenic rides will take you on roads not traveled. Day Trip #1 is a loop with The Snake, over to Roan Mountain, to Banner Elk, Boone. Follow the tours. Or just on the tour and follow the directions. Other Day Trips have side trips to interesting locations off the main road. We have created this Day Trips to give you rides of scenic mountain roads, curvy road, and photo opportunities.
A side trip on Hwy 133 takes you to Backbone Rock – the world’s shortest railroad tunnel over Beaverdam Creek a great fly fishing stream. Often people rock climb on the tunnel and there are good walking trails and picnic areas along the creek.
Or, go the opposite direction on route 91 to the Appalachian Trail and then down to Elizabethton and Worley’s Cave for spelunking.
Before or after tackling "The Snake", plan to stay in one of the mountain cabins, condos, or a house on Watauga Lake. Lodging choices are perfect for friends, couples, or families, traveling to the mountains on vacation or weekend getaways.
